Usually it’s a pretty big deal when Lana Del Rey announces a new album, but that news has been overshadowed by the singer’s comments regarding criticism that her lyrics are “glamorizing abuse.”
In an Instagram post, Del Rey reveals that her next album, the follow-up to 2019’s Grammy-nominated Norman F***ing Rockwell, will be released on September 5. That announcement, though, was included at the end of the lengthy post, during which Del Rey takes aim at the double standard she says is levied against female artists.
“Now that Doja Cat, Ariana [Grande], Camila [Cabello], Cardi B, Kehlani and Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé have had number ones with songs about being sexy, wearing no clothes, f***ing, cheating etc,” Del Rey writes, “can I please go back to singing about being embodied, feeling beautiful by being in love even if the relationship is not perfect, or dancing for money — or whatever I want — without being crucified or saying that I’m glamorizing abuse?”
Del Rey continues to say that she’s “fed up with female writers and alt singers saying that I glamorize abuse when in reality I’m just a glamorous person singing about the realities of what we are all now seeing are very prevalent emotionally abusive relationships all over the world.”
“I think it’s pathetic that my minor lyrical exploration detailing my sometimes submissive or passive roles in my relationships has often made people say I’ve set women back hundreds of years,” she continues.
Since publishing her post, Del Rey has been trending on Twitter, with many users taking issue with her illustrating how she’s being criticized by naming primarily women of color.
