Gary Miller/Getty ImagesRapper and activist Killer Mike and Big Freedia joined the latest episode of Spotify’s Butt Dial podcast to have an in-depth conversation about the Black Trans Lives Matter movement.
Killer Mike revealed his understanding of the LGBTIA+ community after learning about it from his uncle in Atlanta, who was part of the community himself.
“I understood the trans girls; what they understood is that nobody’s coming to save them,” Mike said. “They had a certain amount of unity even within the black community because they understood they were black. When it was time to protest, they would show up and protest with everybody else. You know, when it was time to fight for what was right, they did it.”
The duo also discussed the 13th Amendment, gun ownership, and putting aside our differences within the Black community to create effective change. “We have to fight for what we believe in and fight for who we want to be,” Big Freedia said.
“We have to fight from the time we step out, you know, and come out of that closet. Even before then, we have to protect ourselves and protect what we believe in,” she continued. “The Black community can learn from us if we all start sticking together even more. It’s the time right now.”
Each week, Spotify’s Butt Dial podcast series invites fans to connect with their favorite artist to discuss the current climate of the world through candid discussions via a phone call.
