Credit: Travis ShinnDED has premiered an acoustic version of the band’s new single, “A Mannequin Idol.” The recording certainly paints frontman Joe Cotela‘s voice in a different light, and you should probably expect a few more vocal curveballs in the future.
Speaking with ABC Audio, Cotela explains that he experimented with different textures of his voice while working on the upcoming new DED material with producer Kevin Churko.
“I would shape my mouth differently, try to sing from different parts of my chest and my stomach and my head,” he says.
Cotela adds that all the touring DED did ahead of returning to the studio also affected his approach to singing with the new stuff.
“You kind of find new nuances and new weapons with your voice that you didn’t know you had or that you just never tried to utilize before,” he says.
However, Cotela feels that the core and essence of his voice still remains.
“To me it sounds like me,” he says. “But it just sounds like another version of me.”
