In a three-part Instagram post, frontman Win Butler reveals that the band was “a few months into recording new material when COVID-19 hit.”
“We had been exploring a lot of lyrical and musical themes that feel almost eerily related to what is happening now,” Butler says, adding that they had written a song called “Age of Anxiety” a year ago.
“Needless to say, the writing has intensified, and the work is flowing out,” he continues. “It is challenging as ever, and with just as much purpose.”
It may be a bit before we actually get to hear the new music, though — Butler says the tunes will arrive “eventually…not soon.”
“When you listen to the music that’s coming…you will know what we were working on under quarantine,” he says.
Arcade Fire’s most recent album is 2017’s Everything Now.
